Preserving the Sacred: Expert Team Studies Sai Baba Idol in Shirdi

Shirdi, Maharashtra: In a dedicated effort to safeguard Sai Baba’s idol from further wear and tear, a specialized team from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya conducted an in-depth, two-and-a-half-hour inspection on Friday.

Led by conservator S. Mukherjee, the five-member team began their day by examining the Dwarkamai temple. Around 1:45 p.m., the Sai Temple was closed to devotees, CCTV systems were switched off, and curtains were placed around the idol to ensure an uninterrupted micro-inspection. In keeping with the sanctity of the occasion, the experts wore sovale—traditional attire for religious rituals.

Using specialized cameras, the team documented areas showing black dots or signs of wear. These images will undergo detailed analysis to guide restoration efforts. According to Balasaheb Kolekar, Acting CEO of the Sai Sansthan, a comprehensive written report will be received from examination commitee within six weeks. Preliminary findings confirm that the idol remains largely undamaged, offering reassurance to millions of devotees who visit Shirdi each year.
